Featured on CanvasRebel: Unlearning, Healing & Finding My Voice as a Therapist
I’m thrilled to share that I was recently interviewed by CanvasRebel, a platform that features the voices of artists, and entrepreneurs who are pushing expanding possibilities and doing things differently.
In this interview, I had the opportunity to reflect on a powerful lesson I unlearned: that therapy must always follow a rigid, evidence-based model. While research-backed methods are essential, I’ve come to understand how many of these approaches are rooted in colonized frameworks that often ignore the lived experiences of marginalized communities. As an immigrant and a trauma-informed therapist, I’ve learned to decolonize my approach and invite in tools that are more inclusive, body-centered, and culturally responsive.
I also spoke about what I believe is most essential in this work beyond just training. Things like humility, hands-on experience, open-mindedness, and the willingness to learn from clients just as much as from books. (Though in this age of book bans, I’ll always advocate for the value of knowledge!)
